1.2 Tools and Resources

This lesson is a quick rundown of the tools you will need to complete the projects, as well as some details of what knowledge you should already have in order to complete the course.

1.2 Tools and Resources

First of all, I have to stress that this is an intermediate to advanced-level course. You must be familiar with Adobe Photoshop's interface and tools, and layering system at least. In this course, I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended. But you can also use CS4 or CS5 for completing this coursework. You are also going to need a pressure sensitive tablet like a Wacom Bamboo or Intuos. For beginners, I recommend getting an Intuos Pro S, even though it's a bit on the expensive side, it's a very good investment for any graphic artist. I currently work on an older Wacom Intuos 4M, and I'm very pleased with it. I recommend the Intuos over the Bamboo line because of the exclusive tilt sensitivity that comes with the Intuos line and that works wonders with the tilt-sensitive brushes within Photoshop. Within the files for this course, you will find a folder, named brushes, containing an ABR file with the inking brush that I used in the materials for this course. You'll also find a TPL file with the brush tool preset that I used for sketching, as well as PSD files with the finished layer dark wood for each character. These are for you to study and understand if you've missed anything in the duration of this course. I'll also include a simple breakdown of how to draw hands for the second chapter of this course as a JPEG within the source files. With all that in mind, I think we can get started with working on our characters. So join me in chapter two, and let's start creating a cute pirate character.
