1.1 Introduction
Hello and welcome to Illustrating Personality In Character Design. My name is Ioana Sopov and I'm a freelance illustrator and designer. And in this course I'm going to show you how to create two unique, expressive characters and render them in Adobe Photoshop. Characters are universally present, whether in illustration, game design, advertising or comic books. Good or bad, naughty or nice, everybody loves them. And because characters are so well liked, the trick to successfully creating a lovable or memorable one, is to give it a life of its own, through its own personality. We'll be creating two different characters, each with its own unique personality, in order to grasp the basic principals of form and function and also to fully illustrate the choice is made in their design influence the way they are perceived by the viewer. First we're going to design a cute pirate character and learn the importance of the language of shapes through sketching and establishing the overall form for our character and how this form reflects on his personality. After focusing a bit on the facial features, we'll move on to drafting the final line art and then render our character with some lights, shadows, and textures. In the second part of this course, we'll tackle designing a more complex pirate captain. We'll go through designing the basic figure and pose, detailing our character's costume and features, and ultimately rendering him in the same manner as his previous shipmate. These two projects will be the vehicles towards learning how to draw various materials, hair, facial features, and expression. But also how to use this knowledge in giving your character unique traits to make it instantly recognizable. At the end of this course, you'll have solid knowledge of how to shape and render awesome and memorable characters. So let's move on and take a look at what tools and resources you're going to need for these projects.
