4.1 Sketching
You need a clear idea of what you're designing before jumping behind a computer to create it. In this lesson I'll be developing my initial ideas, as well as using inspiration from the mood boards I made in the previous lesson, to create a number of different routes. I'll sketch and annotate my way through my concepts.

4.1 Sketching
Hi, everyone. Welcome back to the course. In this lesson, we are going to be looking at refining our ideas. And so the last few lessons we've been looking at, so we have a story that we've chosen the story which we're going to be working with. And then we started looking at the themes and ideas in it, and started to do some very basic sketches. And bringing out some concepts from the story which we can begin to push forward and we did a little mood board to help bring out those ideas even more. And now, I've just been doing a few sketches of some more firm ideas of how we can actually create some outlet for the story. So I've got five different ideas here, and I thought I would talk through each of them and maybe as I'm talking, maybe development slightly more. So this first one here is using a phone as like the background and she swap to right is going to be written in like the app icons. I could make each of those quite an exciting looking graphic and then at the bottom, he left. So she swiped right, he left. And so he left would be in the style of a kind of unlock on a phone. So this one, I quite like how, I think aesthetically it would look nice and we could do something fun with all the different icons. And I'm concerned that it wouldn't really feel, it wouldn't really have the feeling of the story in there too much. Like it doesn't really feel that, like get across that betrayal or heartbreak or anything. It will just look quite cool, but I don't think it would really amplify the feeling of the story too much. So perhaps something could be pushed more, I'm not sure if there was in the mood order with cracked phone screen. Maybe if we brought something like that into it, it could work. So, I'm just gonna note that down quickly. Okay, cool. This next idea here is making a doorway out of a phone. So phone is the door and she swiped right written in the phone, he left in the doorway. And I quite love this idea, because the door and the phone sort of and she swiped right leading to him leaving like the door opening leads to him leaving. I think it kind of works nicely in both those ways and I think and in quite like a flat graphic style with nice bright contrasting colors, and getting some shadows creeping in here through the doorway. That would be quite a fun thing to play with. So I'm just gonna note that down, as well. This idea here is using big chunky arrows. She swiped right, he left. She swiped right in a phone as that's the thing she was using all the time, and then he left looking like a suitcase. This one, I'm not as keen on. I think that the big arrows like that will kind of look bold and kind of look appealing in some way. But again, similar to that first idea that doesn't have much feeling to the design. So I'm unsure of how far that one will really go and how effective it will really be. This idea here is based in looking like a Tinder app or something like that. So the big heart in the middle and the colors I could use and the fonts, and the layouts of it could try, and be quite like reminiscent of like maybe slightly sleazy-looking tacky app. So, she swiped right in the middle and then he left again. Swiping off to the left is similar to the unlock you get on the phone. This one could then have the cracked screen or something like that could be brought in to make, to get across that feeling again. And this glass I did on here is just a quite simple one, but l think you could be quite effective of having, she swiped around right to the side on the right side and then feed page he left. Going over to the left and maybe they keep both of these separate bits of text could almost be kind of bleeding just off the edge of the page. I'm just gonna note that down. And then I was thinking, it could be called a make it look like its in the context of a phone to try and hanker it again in the theme of swiping right on a app, or the cheating side of a story trying to get that across. Trying to get the phone across by having maybe along the top have a little like battery icon and a few other things here, you should get along the top of the phone screen. And then fonts we could use in that one could be like a very simple like light version of how best get something which like iPhone or phones tend to use. Make it look kind of quite simple, but make it feel like it's of a phone somehow. And then to bring in the feeling and emotion into the design, perhaps you can do the cracked screen thing again or maybe we can look at doing a phone glitch. So it could be reasonably simple colors like black and white. But then how screens are made up of RGB that those color sequence can be kind of merging out behind them and warping slightly and feeling quite disjointed with everything. So general feelings now, I am feeling like this idea and this one and perhaps this one. These are my favorite three, but I'm still unsure of which one I'm gonna take forward and I think it's good sometimes to give yourself a little break with when you're making ideas and you're starting to sketch and things. So I think what I'm going to do now is just take a little break and come back to it, and then hopefully I have some fresh eyes. Maybe some fresh ideas and be able to take them forward from there. So thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next lesson.
