What Is a Tri-Fold Brochure?
Before we jump into the tutorial, you're probably wondering, "What is a tri-fold brochure?" A tri-fold brochure is one of the most popular formats for advertisements and informational materials. A tri-fold brochure is a three-part design that folds in on itself. The content can be printed on one side, but it's usually displayed on both sides. Many professionals, from building contractors and car dealerships to photographers and college recruiters, use this format to provide information about their products and services.

Now that you understand what a tri-fold brochure is, let's look at how to make a tri-fold brochure. Start with a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper in horizontal orientation. Fold it in thirds, creating three panels that fold into themselves. You are now ready to start designing your tri-fold brochure!

1. How to Set Up Guides in InDesign to Create a Fashion Pamphlet
Create a new document in InDesign (File > New). Use the dimensions 11 in Width and 8.5 in Height. Change the Margins to 0.125 in and Bleed to 0.125 in on each side.
Add two guides by dragging your mouse from the ruler onto page one. If your rulers are hidden, go to View > Show Rulers or Command-R. Place the first guide at the 7.3125 in X Location and the second guide to the 3.625 in X Location.
Add two more guides to page two. Use 7.375 in and 3.6875 in X Locations.
2. How to Place Photos and Arrange Text in a Fashion Tri-Fold Brochure
Open the portrait of laughing female model in Adobe Photoshop. Convert the image to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Select OK if a warning message appears. Go to Image > Image Size. Change the Resolution to 300 and make sure Resample is unchecked. Save the file as a TIFF on your desktop. Follow the same steps for all the other model and product photos except for the heel boot photo. We will save that one differently in future steps.
Select the Rectangle Frame Tool (F) and create a vertical rectangle over the cover, which is the third panel on page one. With this vertical rectangle still selected, go to File > Place, select the smiling model photo we saved earlier, and click Open. Shrink the image 35% and adjust it so that it looks like the image below.
Using the Type Tool (T), type the name of your fashion brand. For this example, I'm using "Lynielle Collection" with the fonts Belajor 50 pt and Freedom Destiny 15 pt.
Add the "New Arrivals" text using Magnify Bold 15 pt. Take the Ellipse Tool (L) and make a circle around the "New Arrivals" text. Make sure the Fill and Stroke are set to None. Grab the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T) and hover over the path until a plus sign appears. Click the path and type "The Season of Florals & Patterns" using Magnify Regular 10 pt and 280 Tracking.
Now let's jump to page two. Create a new swatch in the Swatches panel by selecting the hamburger menu in the top-right corner and clicking New Color Swatch. Change the color to C20 M61 Y100 K0. Select OK.
Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and cover the first panel in the orange swatch we just created. With the Type Tool (T) selected, type the origin story of your business using Belajor 50 pt and Magnify Regular 10 pt font. Change the Leading to 18 pt. To create the drop cap in the first paragraph, highlight the first letter and in the Paragraph panel change the Drop Cap to 3.
Create a new green color swatch C75 M42 Y100 K39. Add a pull quote at the bottom of panels two and three using these settings:
- Quote: Belajor 33 pt
- Name: Magnify Bold 12 pt
- Quotation marks: Freedom Destiny 98 pt
Grab the Rectangle Tool (M) and make a vertical rectangle near the pull-quote. Go to Object > Corner Options. Change the Shape to Rounded and the Size to 0.8826 in.
With the rounded shape selected, place the woman in white blouse photo by going to File > Place. Add a white drop shadow to the rounded shape (Object > Effects > Drop Shadow). Use these settings:
- Mode: Normal | Paper swatch
- Opacity: 100%
- Distance: 0.0625 in
- Angle: 179
- X Offset: 0.0625
- Y Offset: 0.001 in
- Size: 0 in
- Spread: 0%
- Noise: 0%
Create five additional round shapes and place the product and model photos inside the shapes so that it looks like the image below.
Now we're going to save our heel boot photo that I mentioned earlier. Open the female footwear photo in Photoshop. Change the Color Mode to CMYK and the Resolution to 300. Use the Crop Tool (C) and crop the image to the taupe heel boots (second row, middle boot). Go to Select > Subject. Use the Magic Wand Tool (W) to add parts of the boots that weren't selected. Create a Layer Mask. Save the file as a transparent TIFF.
File > Place the heel boots we just saved to our fashion tri-fold brochure in InDesign. Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and make four circles that are 0.4915 in in Diameter. Grab the Type Tool (T) and type the prices of your items using Magnify Bold 17 pt.
Add the item descriptions to the product using Magnify Bold 11 pt for the headline and Belajor 11 pt for the subtitle.
Add two rectangles using the Rectangle Tool (M). The first rectangle is sized to 1.8198 in Width x 0.5065 in Height. The second rectangle is sized to 2.9177 in Width x 0.5065 in Height. Change the Shear X Angle to 14°. Type the "Season Must-Haves" headline on top of these rectangles using Freedom Destiny, 24 pt, and 225 Tracking. Change the font Skew, also known as false italic, to 10°.
Create two rounded shapes just as we did earlier. Grab the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T) and type the name for the green pant suit and the price. Repeat these same steps for the paradise floral shirt. Use the fonts Magnify Bold 11 pt and Belajor 11 pt.
Go back to the first page and add the text and photos using the same fonts we used earlier. Create a paragraph with a drop cap explaining the theme of your collection. Add images of new products, a model photo, information about where your collection can be found, and contact information for your business. Open the shop icons file in Adobe Illustrator. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the storefront icon from Illustrator into InDesign. Change the color of the shop icon to the green color swatch and type the pop-up shop information in a circle.
3. How to Apply Patterns to Create a Tri-Fold Fashion Brochure
To make our fashion tri-fold brochure eye-catching, we will add some patterns. Open the 01.ai file from the organic maze folder in Illustrator. Select various shapes from the pattern and copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) them into the file in InDesign. Move the top-left maze pattern to the back (Command-]) so that the straw hat is brought to the front. Add another orange maze pattern to the first page (center panel).
Open the 1.png file from the plants and foliage folder in Photoshop. Change the color mode to CMYK and the Resolution to 300. Save the file as a transparent TIFF. Create a square frame using the Rectangle Frame Tool (F) on the second and third panels on the second page. File > Place the plant pattern and change the Opacity to 10%.
Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the plant pattern that we just placed on the second and third panels on the first page.
