What You'll Be Creating

Today we will be looking at how to make Instagram story templates! I'll guide you through creating a whole set of matching templates that can then be changed and reused for future promotions by just changing out the fonts and colors.

Templates for Instagram stories are ideal for creating a cohesive look that matches your brand and fits in with your page's aesthetic. That's why we will be focusing on creating a whole set of simple, reusable designs, as opposed to just one complex Instagram story cover template.

What You Will Need

You will need the following resources in order to complete this project:

1. How to Create a Simple Instagram Stroy Template

Step 1

Create a document that is 1080 px by 1920 px.

Step 2

Place and center your model or item onto the canvas.

place model

Step 3

Using the Rectangle Tool, create a rectangle going across the bottom third of the canvas. The color doesn't matter!

Step 4

Add a Gradient Overlay layer effect to the text going from red #ff0300 to orange #ff9000.

add gradient

Step 5

Again using the Rectangle Tool, create a thicker white rectangle going across the top-third of the canvas.

create larger rectangle

Step 6

Using the font Maxwell Sans Small Caps Book, write out the first half of your sales slogan such as "The price hunt" using a dark purple #2d163b color.

Place it towards the top middle of the larger white rectangle.

In the Character panel, add a Spacing of 300.

add subtitle

Step 7

Finish the slogan using the same font but in bold, larger letters, with no spacing.

add main text

Step 8

In the same font as "The Price Hunt", type out a second slogan above the lower rectangle, making sure to leave room for the discount information.

Change it to white, and add a Spacing of 600.

add sub text

Step 9

Using the font Montserrat set to Bold, type out your discount percentage or other sale information.

Place it directly above the gradient rectangle.

add discount amount

Step 10

In the gradient rectangle, type out the rest of your sale information using the Montserrat font set to Bold and white.

If you are creating all of your Instagram stories templates in one document like me, group everything, and name the group "Story 1."

2.  How to Create a Trendy Bubble Effect

Step 1

Place your model in the center of your canvas.

place second model

Step 2

Using the Ellipse Tool, create a few large red #b00a08 circles in the bottom left-hand corner of the canvas.

Select all of the circle shapes and Right-click > Merge Shapes.

create circles

Step 3

Repeat the above step, creating smaller circles.

Step 4

Set the circle shapes to Color Dodge.

Step 5

Use the Line Tool to create a diagonal, bright red #f20000 line with a Weight of 10 px.

Duplicate and flip the line horizontally, pushing it up against the original red line, to create an arrow shape.

Once again, Right-click > Merge Shapes and place it towards the bottom of the Instagram story template.

Step 6

Using the Maxwell Sans Small Caps Book font, type out the description of your items or sale, such as "sportswear", in very large text.

add text

Step 7

Using the Move Tool, flip the text 90 Degrees Counter-Clockwise, placing it on the right side of the canvas.

Step 9

Finish typing "Swipe" in white using the Maxwell Sans Small Caps Book font, directly underneath the red arrow.

3. How to Create a Pixel Overlay Effect

Step 1

Place your model in the center of your canvas.

add third model

Step 2

Using the Rectangle Tool, create multiple different hot pink #ec003a squares and rectangles focusing on the left side of the canvas.

Bring all of the squares' Opacity down to 50%.

Group all of the shapes, and name the group "Pixel Effect."

add pixel effect

Step 3

Use the Line Tool to create a diagonal white line with a Weight of 10 px.

Duplicate and flip the line horizontally, pushing it up against the original white line, to create an arrow shape.

Right-click > Merge Shapes and place the arrow towards the bottom of the Instagram story template.

create arrow

Step 4

Duplicate the arrow, placing the duplicate about 10 px above the original.

Using the Line Tool, add a straight line on both sides of the arrow going off the edges of the canvas.

Right-click > Merge shapes once done.

create longer arrow

Step 5

Using the Open Sans font set to Bold, type the most crucial part of your story in large letters. Break it up into two lines of text so you can enlarge the bottom line.

add title text

Step 6

Using the Maxwell Sans Small Caps Book font, type the secondary information directly below the larger text in a much smaller font.

Align the font to the left.

add sub text

Step 7

Finally, in the Montserrat font set to Bold and white, type "Swipe" directly under the arrows we made.

Set the character Spacing to 350.

Group all of your third Instagram template layers into a group named "3rd story."
