How to use compound shapes in Affinity Designer

In the previous Affinity Designer tutorials, we learned how to use compound shapes and how to add a gradient fill. At this point, you've discovered all the most useful tools available in this design software.

Now that we're at the finish line of our Affinity Designer tutorial for beginners, let's go ahead and add the final details to our project.

Once we're done with this step, you'll be ready to export your brand new Affinity Designer creation!

We'll wrap things up by scaling both the bear and the iceberg down. To select all the right layers easily, follow the steps in this Affinity Designer beginner tutorial.

Step 1

On the Layers panel, expand the Rectangle layer. Select the following layers:

  • the bear (above the Rectangle layer)
  • the top and bottom outlines
  • the two iceberg groups
  • the compound shapes

Step 2

Right-click and assign these layers a blue tag. Let's also unlock them.

Find the color tags at the bottom of the menu

Unlock the objects by clicking on the locks.

Step 3

Now, on the menu at the top, go to Select > Select Same > Tag Color.

Finally, we'll use the Move Tool to scale the selected layers down and center them.
