1. What Is Placeit?

Before we begin, I want to take a couple of moments and quickly talk about what Placeit is and how it can help you.

If you aren’t a designer yourself, most of the time that means that you won’t have access to the tools that they usually use, such as Adobe IllustratorAdobe PhotoshopSketch, etc.

But what if sometimes you actually need to create something yourself, but don’t feel like spending a lot of money on a graphics suite or Photoshop template that you probably won’t use all that often?

Well, when that happens, Placeit can be a better fit, since it comes with a set of online tools that help you create anything from a magazine cover to an app mockup and even a logo, using just a couple of clicks.

That being said, we’re going to see how easy it is to make your own magazine cover using one of its magazine templates.

2. How to Access the Magazine Cover Maker

Before we can start working on the actual cover magazine, we first need to navigate to the correct section of the website that houses the Magazine Cover Maker.

You can access the tool by clicking on the Designs category found within the site's top navigation bar, and then choosing Magazine Cover Maker from the Design Templates side menu.

3. How to Make a Sports Magazine Cover Using the Magazine Cover Maker

Here, you’ll find a selection of different themed cover templates that you can choose from.

Since I’m a big fan of skateboarding, I’m going to go with this skate-themed one, but feel free to choose any other one that you like.

Once you’ve made up your mind, you can easily customize the design by clicking on it, which will open it up for you to edit.

Here, you’ll be greeted by the actual cover front and center, on the sides of which you’ll find all the different available options, which may vary from template to template.

Usually, on the left side you’ll have all your text-related options, while on the right one you’ll find all your background and shape-related ones.

Step 1

Let's start by adjusting some of the cover's text lines. To change any of the default text, all you have to do is click on its corresponding input box, and then overwrite the preview text with your own.

Step 2

You can adjust the text by changing its font and even its color using the dropdown lists.

Step 3

When it comes to colors, you can either choose from one of the predefined values, or you can click on More and use a custom one of your own.

Step 4

If needed, you can actually hide a text line by unchecking the little checkbox found in front of it.

Step 5

If we move on to the right side of the page, we’ll see an option called Title Graphic, which will allow us to change the color and shape of the rectangle found underneath our text line.

Step 6

We then have Background, which lets us use a custom background color or image.

Personally, I really like this photo that's provided, so I’ll be using it as my background, but you can always upload your own image using the Custom Image button.

Step 7

Since the template supports interactive editing, we can easily adjust the position of some of our cover’s composing elements by first clicking on them in order to bring up their bounding box, and then simply clicking and dragging in order to reposition them as needed.

Step 8

You can also resize them by hovering over their bounding box’s corners and then clicking and dragging either outwards or inwards, depending on what you’re trying to achieve.

Step 9

If for some reason you’re not happy with the result, you can easily undo all the changes by using the Reset Layout button.

Once you’ve finished customizing the template using the Magazine Cover Maker, you can easily download the resulting design by simply clicking on the Download button, which will charge you a small fee every time you use it.
