In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make text transparent in Photoshop. I'll explain everything in so much detail that everyone can make transparent text in Photoshop, even those who have just opened the program for the first time.

1. How to Make Text Transparent in Photoshop (Method 1)

Step 1

In this section, we are going to make our text transparent by reducing its opacity. I'll use the design below, made using the Nettle Leaves Pattern With Frame photo and the Bergen Text font, for demonstration purposes.

Step 2

Now set the Opacity of the text layer to 50%.

2. How to Make the Text Background Transparent in Photoshop (Method 2)

Step 1

In this section, we are going to make the text transparent by removing the fill and adding an outline effect. I'll use the same design for demonstration purposes. First, we're going to remove the fill, so set the Fill of the text layer to 0%.

Step 2

Now Right-click on this layer, and choose Blending Options. Select and check the Stroke effect, and set the Size to 15 px, Position to Outside, and color to #ffffff. Leave the other settings at the defaults.

3. How to Make Letters Transparent in Photoshop (Method 3)

Step 1

In this section, we are going to make the text transparent by removing its fill and adding a bevel and emboss effect. I'll use the same design for demonstration purposes again. First, we're going to remove the fill, so set the Fill of the text layer to 0%.

Step 2

Now Right-click on this layer, and choose Blending Options. Select and check the Bevel & Emboss effect, and choose the following settings:

  • Technique: Chisel Hard
  • Depth: 150%
  • Size: 35 px
  • Angle: 30°
  • Altitude: 35°
  • Gloss Contour: Rounded Steps
  • Highlight Mode: Linear Dodge (Add)
  • Opacity of the Highlight and Shadow Mode: 100%

Leave the other settings at the defaults.
