1. How to Deselect in Illustrator

Method #1

To deselect one object in Illustrator, pick the Selection Tool (V) or the Direct Selection Tool (A) and click on an empty space outside your selection.

Alternatively, you can hold down the Control key and click on an empty space outside your selection to deselect one object in Illustrator.

2. How to Deselect Just One Object From a Selection of Multiple Objects

When you have several objects selected and you need to deselect just one of those objects, simply hold down the Shift key and click that object.

3. How to Deselect When Using the Pen Tool in Illustrator

To end a path that's been created using the Pen Tool, press the Esc key. To deselect it, hold down the Control key and click on an empty space outside your path.

4. How to Deselect an Image in Illustrator

Let's say that you've zoomed in on a selected image, and there's no empty space where you could click to deselect it. You could zoom out until you get that empty space, but a much easier way is to press Shift-Control-A.

5. How to Deselect the Perspective Tool in Illustrator

Finally, let's learn how to deselect the Perspective Tool in Illustrator and get rid of that perspective grid. As long as the Perspective Grid Tool is selected from your toolbar, you can click the tiny X button from the round icon that's in the top-left corner. Alternatively, you can press the Esc key.

When the Perspective Grid Tool is not selected, you need to go View > Perspective Grid > Hide Grid, or you can press Shift-Control-I.
