1. How to Deselect in Illustrator
Method #1
To deselect one object in Illustrator, pick the Selection Tool (V) or the Direct Selection Tool (A) and click on an empty space outside your selection.



Method #2
Alternatively, you can hold down the Control key and click on an empty space outside your selection to deselect one object in Illustrator.



2. How to Deselect Just One Object From a Selection of Multiple Objects
When you have several objects selected and you need to deselect just one of those objects, simply hold down the Shift key and click that object.



3. How to Deselect When Using the Pen Tool in Illustrator
To end a path that's been created using the Pen Tool, press the Esc key. To deselect it, hold down the Control key and click on an empty space outside your path.
