Photoshop is a powerful photography and design program, but even the most experienced users make mistakes, and that's where the Photoshop History panel and Undo come in. Whether you just realized that you forgot to add a shadow to an element or that you accidentally deleted the entire layer, it's not difficult to delete something in Photoshop that cannot be easily fixed.

Let's get started and learn how to undo in Photoshop!

How to Undo in Photoshop

Option 1

Your first and easiest option when learning how to undo something in Photoshop is to use Control/Command-Z to Undo the last action you took.

You can keep pressing Control/Command-Z until you either run out of History States or you are back to where you want to be.

You can undo up to 30 times by default. Want more? Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance to increase the number of History States.

Option 2

The second option is to use the Photoshop History panel. You can open it by going to Window > History. This panel will give you a list of the actions and edits you've done so far.

To Undo, click on the last state you want to revert back to. All the History States that come after the selected state will turn gray. If you make a new edit or action, all the greyed-out states will be deleted and replaced with the new edit.

Using the Photoshop History panel can be handy when you know you want to make several undos, and you have a large number of history states available.
