What Is a Thin Serif Font? Why Use One?
So, what's a thin serif font? What's a serif narrow font? How about condensed fonts? Is there a difference? And how do you choose the best thin fonts for your project?
It's important to note that condensed is generally a different descriptor than thin when talking about typography. For the purposes of this article, we'll classify them in this way:
- Condensed fonts tend to have a large height to width ratio. This means, for example, a font that isn't very wide, but is much taller. A condensed font does not have to be a thin font. You can, for example, have a condensed font that is also thick and bold.
- Thin fonts are "thin" in the sense that they do not have much line width. In font families, this style is often called Light, Extra Light, or Thin. A font can be thin or light without necessarily being condensed.
As an example, take a look at this tall thin serif font. We could consider this font both thin and condensed at the same time. Its proportions are condensed, and the lines themselves are thin. Note that the serifs are highlighted in the bottom example.

Fonts can be thin but not condensed, like this example. In fact, thin fonts can make for a really elegant design choice. Note how the font lends itself to an aesthetic that feels serious. Think about what you would assume about this book, based on the cover alone. The font choice really has an impact on how this visually communicates.

Thin serif fonts can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles. Remember, the focus here is on the width of the letters themselves. Bold fonts tend to feel strong or even loud. They make a bolder impact! Light fonts, on the other hand, with a thin stroke, can be softer and more whisper-like. Of course, in the end, this all depends on how the designer opts to use the font, but take these perspectives and consider them.
