How to Make Your Own Cookbook Template
Want to know how to create your own cookbook template? Or maybe you've found a perfect template, but you're not quite sure where to start when it comes to making your customizations.
Let's take a look at some quick design tips to help you get going, whether you'd like to make your own recipe book template or work with a ready-made design.
In this demonstration, we'll use this sample cookbook template from Envato Elements. This is an awesome template, because it's compatible with multiple types of software—Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and more! It's a great fit if you're looking for a Microsoft Word recipe template, but we'll take a look in Adobe InDesign.
1. Placing Your Own Imagery
Whether you're working with a template or creating a layout of your own, you'll want to place your own imagery. In Adobe InDesign, we can do that by going to File > Place in the software menu.
In the case of a template, make sure to select the Rectangular Frame holding the placeholder image—then place your image.
2. Place and Edit Type
Almost every layout is going to work with type in some way—and cookbooks are certainly no exception. Use the Text Tool to edit existing type. Simply click on the type and/or text box in question, and start editing.
Want to add some new type? Click and drag with the Text Tool active to create a new text box.
3. Change the Font Styles
And you'll likely want to experiment with the font too. To do so, check out the Character panel. You can find it by going to Window > Type & Tables > Character.
From here, we can do things like changing the font, the font size, the style, the line height, and more!
4. Adjust and Refine Your Body Copy
Your cookbook will likely have a lot of body copy too. In the example, below, some sample type has been added and customized in the template layout.
For customizing paragraphs, check out the Paragraph panel. We can find it by going to Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph. Use this panel do to things like changing the text alignment, toggling hyphenation on or off, and much more.
5. Add and Change Colors
But what about color? Take a look at your Tools—see the large teal square below? That's our Fill Color, and the outlined box behind it is our Stroke Color. Click on these boxes to choose a new Fill Color or Stroke Color.
To change the color of a specific Rectangular Frame, select it first—then click to change the Fill or Stroke color, as shown below.
