Though not the first typeface to imitate typewriting, American Typewriter is certainly the most enduring and iconic. If you're interested in finding American Typewriter alternatives, you're in for a treat.
American Typewriter Font History
Though not a very old font, American Typewriter is one of the best known and loved fonts. Created in 1974 for International Typeface Corporation by Tony Stan and Joel Kaden, American Typewriter was designed to mark the 100th anniversary of the invention of the office typewriter.
The font, which was originally released in cold type before being released digitally, is based on the popular slab serif style font of the classic typewriter.
American Typewriter Font Characteristics
The goal in creating the typeface was to retain the unmistakable look of typewriter type, while overcoming some of its flaws, like poor readability. For this reason, unlike most true typewriter fonts, American Typewriter offers a proportional design, meaning the characters do not all have the same width. This makes it much more readable than the type from standard typewriters.
American Typewriter has a range of four weights from light to bold (with matching italics) and separate condensed styles.
Common Uses for American Typewriter Font
With a vintage quality that is charming and nostalgic, American Typewriter's popularity has shown no sign of waning. Indeed, it has been pressed into service to create some of the most iconic and memorable text in contemporary history, like Milton Glaser's "I Love New York" logo.
It has also been the font of choice for countless books and movies, as well as many TV production titles, from CBS sitcom Young Sheldon to NBC's The Office.
Even businesses as disparate as OfficeMax and TVOntario use American Typewriter in their logos.
