How to Create a Simple Wedding Confetti Text Effect in Adobe Photoshop

This tutorial will show you how to use a couple of textures, brushes, and layer styles to create a wedding-themed, confetti text effect. Let's get started!
This text effect was inspired by the many Layer Styles available on GraphicRiver.
Tutorial Assets
The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:
- InterFace Regular font
- Smooth_stucco_flat_white_paint_plaster_wall_textur by hhh316
- blank paper pink by montroytana
- Gift_Wrapping_Paper6 (image #6) by texturetaddka
- hearts vector brushes by szuia
1. How to Create a Background and Add Text
Step 1
Create a new 950 x 800 px document, and place the Smooth_stucco_flat_white_paint_plaster_wall_textur image on top of the Background layer.
Resize the texture as needed, and rename its layer to BG Texture.

Step 2
Click the Create new fill or adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and choose Levels.

Step 3
Clip the Levels layer to the BG Texture layer, and change the Gamma value to 1.95.

Step 4
Create the text in All Caps using the font InterFace Regular.
Change the Size to 250 pt, set the Tracking value to 100, and if you have multiple lines of text, change the Leading value to 250.

2. How to Add Textures and Layer Masks
Step 1
Place the blank paper pink texture on top of all layers, resize it as needed, and rename its layer to Pink.

Step 2
Hold the Option key, and click the Add layer mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a mask that hides the texture.

Step 3
Duplicate the Pink layer.

Step 4
Repeat the same steps to add the Gift_Wrapping_Paper6 texture, and make sure to rename this texture's layer to Gold.

3. How to Create Confetti Brushes
Step 1
Pick the Brush Tool, and open the Brush panel. Choose a hard round tip and use these settings:
Brush Tip Shape

Shape Dynamics

Step 2
Click the Create new brush icon at the bottom right corner of the Brush panel, enter Round Confetti for the Name, and click OK.

Step 3
Pick the s24 brush tip from the hearts vector brushes pack, and use these settings:
Brush Tip Shape

Shape Dynamics

Scattering

Save this brush tip and name it Heart Confetti.

Step 4
Pick the Hard Square 24 pixels brush tip, and use these settings:
Brush Tip Shape

Shape Dynamics

Scattering

Save this brush tip and name it Top Confetti.

4. How to Stroke the Text's Work Path
Step 1
Right-click the text layer, and choose Create Work Path. Then hide the text layer by clicking the eye icon next to it.

Step 2
Pick the Brush Tool, choose the Heart Confetti tip, and set the Foreground Color to White.
Select the Gold layer's mask thumbnail, and hit the Return key once to stroke the path.

Step 3
Select the Gold copy layer's mask thumbnail, and hit Return one more time to create another stroke.

Step 4
Hide both Gold layers.

5. How to Add a Work Path Using the Pen Tool
Step 1
Next, we are going to add another work path in the middle of the one we already have. So pick the Pen Tool, and make sure that the Path option is selected in the Options bar.
To create straight lines, click once to add an anchor point, and then hold the Shift key, and click again to add the other anchor point of the line.

Step 2
Hold the Command key, and click anywhere outside the path you're done creating before starting a new one.

Step 3
To create curves, you'll need to click-drag when you add the anchor points.

Step 4
You can always use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to adjust the anchor points and their handles, and modify the work path.

Step 5
Once you're done creating the inner work path, pick the Brush Tool, and use the Round Confetti tip to stroke both Pink layers.
Press the A key and then hit Return to get rid of the work path.

6. How to Style the Round Confetti
Double-click the Pink layer to apply the following layer style:
Step 1
Add a Color Overlay with these settings:
-
Color:
#edcdd2
You can use different colors and/or blend modes to get more details if you like.

Step 2
Add a Drop Shadow with these settings:
- Opacity: 10%
- Distance: 7
- Size: 3

Step 3
Right-click the Pink layer, choose Copy Layer Style, and then right-click the Pink copy layer, and choose Paste Layer Style.

7. How to Style the Heart Confetti
Step 1
Make both Gold layers visible.

Step 2
Double-click the Gold layer to apply a Drop Shadow effect with these settings:
- Opacity: 20%
- Distance: 7
- Size: 3

Step 3
Copy and Paste the layer style to the Gold copy layer.

8. How to Move Textures Inside Layer Masks
Step 1
Place the Gold layer below the Pink copy layer to make the effect more dynamic. Then click the link icon between each layer and mask's thumbnail to unlink them.

Step 2
Click the layer's thumbnail, and press Command-T to enter Free Transform Mode. Then move and resize the texture to get a result you like.

Step 3
Hit the Return key to accept the changes.

9. How to Create Out-of-Focus Confetti
Step 1
Add the Gift_Wrapping_Paper6 texture again on top of all layers, rename its layer to Top Confetti, and try not to downsize it a lot, since it's supposed to be closer and bigger.
Add a Hide All mask, and then use the Top Confetti brush tip to manually paint and add in some confetti around the text.

Step 2
Right-click the Top Confetti layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Step 3
Go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Path Blur. Create the path by click-dragging the control points, and use the settings you like.

Step 4
Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and set the Radius to 3.

Step 5
Double-click the Top Confetti layer to apply a Drop Shadow with these settings:
- Opacity: 5%
- Distance: 70
- Size: 5

This will finish off the effect.

Congratulations! You're Done
In this tutorial, we added a simple background, created the text, and added a couple of masked texture layers.
Then, we modified and saved a couple of brush tips, created a work path, and stroked the heart confetti. After that, we used the Pen Tool to add an inner work path, added the round confetti, and styled all the layers.
Finally, we added some out-of-focus confetti on top, with some blur filters, to finish everything off.
