Modelling & Rigging a Cartoon Parrot in Maya: Part 6



1. Creating Eyeballs
Step 1
Open the file in Maya which was saved in the last part of the tutorial.



Step 2
In the side view, click on the sphere primitive icon and create a sphere inside the eye socket of the parrot.



Step 3
In the perspective view, adjust the eye ball position properly.



Step 4
With the eye ball sphere selected, go to Show > Isolate Select and turn on View Selected option to isolate the selected eye ball sphere.



Step 5
Press F11 key for the face selection mode. Select the indicated faces of the sphere as shown in the following image.



Step 6
Press Delete key to delete the selected faces.



Step 7
With the
sphere ball selected, go to Channel Box/Layer Editor and rename it as Left_Inner_Eyeball.



Step 8
With the Left_Inner_Eyeball selected, press Ctrl-D to make a clone of it. Select
the cloned one and scale it up a little bit and rename it as Left_Outer_Eyeball.



Step 9
With the Left_Outer_Eyeball selected, create a new layer and rename it as Eyeball. Turn off the visibility of the layer.



Step 10
With the Left_Inner_Eyeball selected, go to Edit Mesh menu and select Insert Edge Loop Tool.



Step 11
With the Insert Edge Loop tool selected, click and insert an edge loop as shown in the following image.



Step 12
Press F9 key for the vertex selection mode. Select the indicated vertices and push them inside a little bit as shown in the following image.



2. Unwrapping the Eyeball
Step 1
With the Left_Inner_Eyeball selected, go to Create UVs > Planar Mapping and click on the option box.



Step 2
In the Planar Mapping Options window, turn on Fit projection to Best plane radio button and then click on Project button.



Step 3
In the UV Texture Editor window, you can see the eyeball UVs.



Step 4
Press F12 key for UV selection mode. Select all UVs inside the UV Texture Editor window.



Step 5
With the eyeball UVs selected, go to Tool > Smooth UV Tool.



Step 6
Click and slide the Unfold button horizontally. Click the Relax button to relax the UVs as shown in the following image.



Step 7
With the eyeball mesh selected, go to Polygons > UV Snapshot command.



Step 8
Save the snapshot as Eye UVs map.JPG and in 2048 pixels resolution. Click on OK button.



3. Texturing Eyeballs in Photoshop
Step 1
Open Photoshop. Go to File > Open and import the Eyes UV map.JPG Map.



Step 2
Create a new layer as Layer 2 in Photoshop. With the Elliptical Marquee tool selected, draw a selection in the center of the eyeball as shown in the following image.



Step 3
Fill the color of your own choice inside the selection with the help of Gradient Fill tool. In this case, I have chosen the color turquoise.



Step 4
Create a new layer as Layer 3. With the help of Elliptical Marquee tool, make a selection in the center and fill it with the color black.



Step 5
Create one more new layer as Layer 4. With the help of Brush tool, apply several light strokes for the iris texture. Later, change the blending mode of the Layer 4 to Overlay.



Step 6
After
completing the eye texture map, save it as Eye
Color Map.JPG.



4. Creating Eye Texture Material in Maya
Step 1
Open Maya. Create an eye texture material inside the Hypershade window.



Step 2
Apply the Eye Color Map.JPG on the Left_Inner_Eyeball.



Step 3
Create a blinn material for the outer eye ball. Set the Color to white, Transparency as 90 and Eccentricity about 0.094.



Step 4
After creating the outer eye ball material, apply it on the Left_Outer_Eyeball mesh. With both Left_Inner_Eyeball and Left_Outer_Eyeball selected, press Ctrl-G keys to group them together.



Step 5
After grouping the eyeballs, make a duplicate copy of it for the right side eye of the parrot. Put both eyeballs inside the eye sockets properly. In this way I have completed Feathers texture map and eyeballs texture, in the next part of tutorial I will create fur for body.
