Make a Set of Space Invaders Christmas Ornaments

I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't have fond memories of playing Space Invaders as a kid, so why not add a little geek nostalgia to the tree this Christmas with some colourful Space Invaders ornaments. This set of four ornaments are simple to make with Hama (also known as perler) beads, and can we whipped up in less than an hour. Read on for step-by-step instructions and the pattern layout...
Supplies

- Hama (or Perler) beads in assorted colours including green, yellow, pink, blue and white.
- Square Hama pegboard.
- Tweezers (optional but useful).
- Silicone baking paper (ironing paper).
- Iron.
- Heat-proof surface
- Heavy book.
- 4 x 12cm (4 inch) lengths of metallic thread or embroidery floss.
What Are Hama Beads?
I'm glad you asked. Hama Beads (also called Perler beads) are small plastic beads/tubes that are placed one by one on to a pegboard and then ironed until the beads are fused together. They are available at some craft stores, online and even at IKEA.
Step 1: Lay Out Your Beads
Following the pattern layouts, place your beads, one by one, onto the peg board. Tweezers can help moving the beads around. It might help if you count the number of pegs over to work out where to start your design.

Step 2: Iron Your Bead Design
Place your non-stick ironing paper over your design on a heat-proof surface. Apply the iron (no steam!) for just a few seconds using smooth movements, making sure the iron doesn't touch the pegboard. Leave your bead design to cool for a short time, then carefully remove it from the pegboard.

Step 3: Flip and Iron the Other Side
Once you have removed the design from the board, the beads will be fused together on one side. Flip the design and on a heat-proof flat surface, iron the other side with the non-stick ironing paper between the beads and your iron.

Step 4: Weigh Down Your Ornaments
While still warm, place a heavy book on top of the ornament to avoid the edges curling up as it cools.

Step 5: Attach the Thread
Once the ornaments are cool, tie a loop with the thread through the hanging holes.

You’re done! Too easy, right? Now have fun decorating your tree!
