Tired of those raggedy old wash cloths in the bathroom? Crochet yourself a new set! With the Tunisian stitch, these wash cloths look like something else!
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet, follow our series of crochet fundamentals. This tutorial uses US crochet terminology, with the Australian and UK terms in brackets. Stitches include chain (ch)[ch], single crochet (sc)[dc] and Tunisian simple stitch (tss)[tss].
Supplies
- Yarn (I used cotton yarn)
- Tunisian crochet hook (I used a 4 mm hook)
- Darning needle for sewing in the ends
- Scissors
- Blocking board and pins

1. Crochet a Wash Cloth
Step 1
Start with a slip knot on your hook, and chain 30.
Step 2
Pick up stitches all along your chain. Make sure you have 30 loops on your hook. If you don't know how to do this, check out our video on How to Do Tunisian Crochet Stitch.
Step 3
Work the Tunisian simple stitch for 25 or 28 rows, until your piece is square. Again, check the video if you're not sure how to do this.
Your piece will curl up a lot while working on it; this is perfectly normal, and we're going to make it nice and flat in the last step.
Step 4
If you wish to change colour in your piece, work all the stitches off your needle until two loops remain.
Yarn over and pull through the two loops with your new colour; then continue the Tunisian simple stitch with your new colour.
Step 5
When your piece is square, it's time to give it a nice finish. Work all the stitches off your needle. We're going to single crochet each stitch to finish it, so insert your hook into the vertical strand, as you would when working a Tunisian simple stitch. Then finish it by working a single crochet stitch.
When you've reached the end of the row, cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. Sew in the ends with your darning needle.
Step 6
Tunisian crochet has a tendency to curl up, so we're going to wet block our piece to make it lie nice and flat.
Use a blocking board and some pins, and pin your piece flat. Make it wet by spraying it with tepid water from a spray bottle, and leave to dry. Once it's dry, remove the pins and voila! Your piece has transformed from a curly mess into a gorgeous wash cloth!
Enjoy Your Wash Cloths
You can make endless variations with this pattern by using different yarns and colour combinations. If you're going to use them for your face, be sure to use soft yarns. Most acrylic yarns will be too hard for your skin.
