1. How to Save as a PNG in Illustrator: Method #1
Start by going to File > Export > Export As. Select PNG from the Save as type menu, and then click the Export button. This will open the PNG Options window.
If you wish to export your PNG with a transparent background, remember to select Transparent from the Background Color menu. Once you're done, click OK to export your design as a PNG file.
2. How to Save as a PNG in Illustrator: Method #2
Alternatively, you can go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)... (Alt-Shift-Control-S). Just select PNG from the dropdown menu, and remember to check the Transparency box if you wish to export the PNG with a transparent background.
