Crochet Fundamentals: How to Crochet a Hexagon

In this tutorial you will learn how to make a crochet hexagon. The hexagon is enjoying a lot of popularity lately and it's the perfect motif to crochet anything from afghans to table runners. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet, follow our series of Crochet Fundamentals. This pattern uses US terms and stitches include double crochet (dc); slip stitch (sl st) and chain (ch).

Supplies

Yarn (I use Drops Paris cotton yarn by Garnstudio).
A crochet hook
A darning needle for sewing in the ends
A pair of scissors

1. Crochet a Hexagon

Step 1

To start your hexagon, make a magic circle and secure with a stitch. If you don't know how to do this, be sure to check out our video on how to make a magic circle.

Chain two (counting as 1 dc), then work one double crochet (dc) into the ring. Chain two and work two dc into the ring. *ch2, dc2* around, until you have six 2dc-clusters separated by ch2.

Pull the yarn tail to close the circle, and then finish the round by slip stitching into the back loop of your beginning chain two.

Step 2

Chain three (counting as 1 dc), then work one double crochet (dc) into the next stitch.

You have now reached a corner space. Work *1dc, ch 2, 1dc* into the space to create the next corner. Work 1dc into each next stitch, and work *1dc, ch2, 1dc* in each corner space. Join the round like you did in the previous step; by slip stitching into the back loop of your beginning chain three.

Step 3

Chain three (counting as 1 dc), then work one double crochet (dc) into each of the the next stitches. Work *1dc, ch2, 1dc* in each corner space around, and work 1dc in each stitch. Finish the round with a slip stitch.
