Create a Cybernetic Woman in Photoshop

Photoshop can let us do some amazing things. In this long and detailed tutorial we will demonstrate how to create a cybernetic woman using a photo of a model and a few stock images. This content includes written and video content. Let's get started!

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.

Before We Begin

Special thanks to the model Ana Ilinca and Her husband Daniel Ilinca the photographer for providing the brilliant sharp image which we will use for this tutorial, pay them a visit, both are very talented and available for work.

Step 1- Setup the skull

OK let's get started, we will begin with this stock image from a skull that we will setup to fit the cybernetic mechanism we are trying to represent.

First off let's create our document with these settings and size here.

Fill in the background with a plain black.

Then copy and paste the image of the skull into a new layer.

OK now that we have our skull let's desaturate it to get rid of all the original color.

OK looking much better already, now we need to remove the black background from it.

Since we have a great deal of contrast between the back and the skull we can use the magic wand tool to make a quick selection.

Set the tolerance to 2 and make a selection of the black around the skull; be sure that all around the skull is selected.

Now there will probably be some spill of the selection in the lower section of the skull so we will quickly use the lasso tool to fix this.

So just the lasso tool to remove this section from inside the skull area from the selection.

Once this is ready, inverse the selection and on the top bar click on refine edge.

On the dialog box let's make all these adjustments to refine the selection a bit.

Once you click OK on the dialog box and the modifications are applied, just create a new layer mask.

Now let's use the rectangular selection tool, so go ahead and select it.

Let's make selections of what is left so we can complete the mask for our skull.

Now just fill in with black the rest of the mask.

You should end up with the skull shape clearly defined with white in the layer mask.

Then let's apply the layer mask.

And let's make a duplicate of it.

Now let's hide these other two layers so we can work on the first copy.

Now go to the filter menu and select "convert for smart filters"

You will get this warning box from Photoshop, so just hit OK.

Now we can apply all the filters we want in a non destructive manner to this layer, and also disable them or adjust them at any time, just like adjustment layers. So let's select the accented edges filter.

Adjust the settings for the filter as shown here.

Once applied this is the stack you get that shows the edit able filter at the bottom and a mask you can use between the layer and the filter.

Let's now go to the top layer so enable its viewing icon.

We will first apply a smart blur filter directly.

Adjust the settings as shown and re-apply the filter five times.

Now we can do the same as the other and convert the layer for smart filters

Hit OK on the dialog box and select plastic wrap from the filters.

Adjust the settings as seen here.

Then set the layer mode to overlay.

And this is what we have so far, a smoother skull with a metal appearance to it.

Now let's grab all of our skull layers and group them together.

Then just to finalize this step name the group skull.

Step 2 - Mask the model

On this step we will be working with the main character image of the model and we will extract her from the backdrop, plus we will be separating her into just the face and the torso, so go ahead and open the image shown here.

Copy and paste it on to a new layer and select the scale command so we can re size it.

Scale down the image as seen here.

Then in the select menu access the quick mask mode.

Then select the paintbrush tool and choose this tip here.

Be sure that the brush is set to 100% opacity.

Now while you are in quick mask mode, everything you paint will appear in red if you haven't altered the standard quick mask color preference. So start defining the border of the model.

Just work around the edge detail until you have all of her covered in red, and of course change the brush size as needed.

Now for the edges of the missing shoulders we will make those sharp using the rectangular selection tool.

Just drag a selection as shown here right at the border of the image.

Then select the eraser tool

And erase the mask as shown here.

Now do the same for the other side of the image.

Then go again to the select menu and disable the quick mask mode.

As soon as you disable it, you will get a selection in place of the mask.

On the select menu inverse the selection

Once you have inverted the selection access the refine edge tool.

On the dialog box adjust the settings for it as shown here.

You will get a new layer with a layer mask already in place.

Right away let's make a duplicate of the layer.

Now we have two layers, one for the face and one for the torso.

Before we continue working with the image let's make a gradient for the back so its not all solid black.

Select this simple black to white gradient.

Make sure you have the circular gradient icon selected.

And while you have the background layer selected drag the big gradient as shown here.

This is the result you should get where we can see a bit of the missing shoulder sections.

Then for the top layer go ahead and apply the layer mask.

This gets rid of the mask and makes the cutout permanent, so be sure you have the mask perfect before applying this change.

Now to continue working we will create a new layer mask.

Then make the same black brush we have been using about 73 in size

And start masking off all the black blouse as shown here.

Then re size the brush to about 30 px

And detail the edge where the face starts.

Continue with this process until you have masked all of the neck.

Then increase the size of the brush to 141 px

And mask off the rest of the black clothing.

You should end up with just the head as shown here.

Then let's duplicate this layer

Let's now make a quick selection of the mask.

And then inverse the selection.

Without deselecting, go ahead and delete the layer mask as shown here.

You will get this dialog box; just hit delete.

And now click on the new layer mask icon so we get a new mask but with the opposite effect as the previous layer.

Now we have detailed sections for the torso and for the head in separate layers.

And we have finalized this step resulting in three layers that we will use for the rest of our work.

Step 3 - Section the face and adjust the skull

To start off let's duplicate the face layer first.

Then apply the layer mask for this new duplicate.

OK these leaves us with a layer of the head that we can work with to create the sections.

Let's just now duplicate this last layer to keep safe in case we mess up.

Now go ahead and select the polygonal lasso tool.

Then simple enough we start on the left side of the head and define a cut as you can clearly see here; and then just cut and paste the section on to a new layer.

Once you have the section in a separate layer just reposition it a bit further out as seen here.

Now go back to the main face layer and define another cut section as shown here.

And repeat the same steps, cut and paste the section to a new layer and move it a bit to the left.

Let's repeat this once more for one last final cut in the face section as shown here, right about the middle of the face.

Then move this third piece a bit to the left so you have all pieces with just a small gap between them.

OK now you should have these four layers each containing a section of the face.

Let's now select the three smaller sections only, leave out the big piece.

Select the rotate command.

Now before we rotate, find the central anchor point of this selection.

And drag the anchor point all the way down to the lower right corner at the tip of the section.

Now you can rotate, and you will see how the lower right corner stays put while the rest rotates.

Now let's just select these two pieces, drop the one closer to the rest of the face.

And again access the rotate command

Move the anchor way down right at the tip of the middle cut section as shown.

And now rotate these two pieces as shown here.

Now let's just select the last piece further left (the one with the ear)

And once again access the rotate command.

Move the anchor point.

And rotate the last piece as shown here.

OK now we have our pieces spread nicely; let's go back to the skull group, duplicate it and merge the duplicate.

Now go to the scale command

And scale the skull as needed so it fits evenly for the head proportions.

Now drag the skull merged group layer all the way to the top for now and reduce its opacity just a bit.

Go to the edit menu and select the distort command.

We need to make the skull fit our model so go ahead and distort evenly as shown here.

OK for now let's hide all the pieces layers and enable the full face layer so we can clearly see the boundaries of it.

Let's first center the skull in the face as indicated here.

And once again access the distort command

Fine tune the skull shape to fit the face as needed.

Now let's use the warp command from the edit menu.

Use the lines to distort the skull a bit more so it fits inside the head boundaries and the eyes and nose align with the model.

OK now to finalize we will access the puppet warp command from the edit menu.

Once you have enabled the puppet warp, you will get a grid that covers all the selected layer content; now each time you click over the image you get a yellow anchor handle; so go ahead and click until you get all these, and then reposition them as shown to alter the shape of the skull a bit.

Now we can drag the layer down and restor its opacity to full.

Also enable the face sections above and hide the full face layer below.

And here is what we have so far.

OK to continue we will ad a shadow layer for our skull; so go ahead and create one over the skull and make it a clipping mask.

Now adjust the layer as shown here and set its mode to multiply.

Let's use a big soft brush and reduce its opacity a bit.

Now mask off the darkening effect of this layer where we would get light on to the skull in between the face pieces.

Now reduce the brush size a bit.

And refine the shading as indicated here.

At this point I decided that the face sections are too much on top of the skull so let's rotate them a bit more; so go ahead and select the three face piece layers.

Access the rotate command.

As we have done before readjust the central anchor point.

Then rotate a bit more so we can see almost all that half of the skull.

Let's grab our soft brush again at about 300px

And let's mask off the shading to adjust for the changes.

Now we will be adding some texture to the skull so create a new layer as shown here.

Let's use the rectangular selection tool

Drag a square selection as seen here.

Fill the selection in the new layer with black.

Once you have it filled, access the layer style by double clicking on the layer; and then enable pattern overlay, and select this pattern from the pat. file.

Then simply create a new layer and merge both so they are flattened.

This gives us a layer that now we can manipulate to fit our skull.

Then go ahead and access the warp command again.

We will do extensive use of this tool as shown here so we can reshape the texture to the shape of the skull.

Then make the layer clipped to the skull layer, set its mode to overlay, and drag it on top the levels layer.

You can clearly see here the effect our texture provides.

Finally just invert the layer.

And we have our pieces cutout and a nice looking texture for our skull.

Step 4 - Structure and thickness for the face pieces

Now we will take some steps into making our cutout pieces for the face have some thickness and structure. Let's select all the four layers for our head pieces.

Make a duplicate of all these layers and leave them on top, we will be working on the original four layers below. Let's start with the bigger piece so go ahead and select this layer.

Let's first desaturate the layer.

Then move it just a bit as shown here so we have some thin edge showing below the color piece.

Let's now directly access the levels for this layer.

Adjust the settings as shown here.

You can see where are we going with this creating the appearance of some thickness for our face pieces.

Now let's use the layer styles to quickly apply some bevel to our face piece.

Let's now continue with the next piece and take exactly the same steps.

Repeating the same process, first desaturate the layer.

Then slightly shifting its position so we get a thin edge

Then access the levels and adjust as indicated below.

Then go to the previous layer and copy its layer style

And paste it on the next layer.

Repeat the same steps for the other two pieces so you should end up with this here.

Now let's group all of these beveled layers and hide the group for now.

Let's create a new layer as shown here.

Select the pen tool.

And define what would be the back of the edges for the face section as shown here.

Be sure you have the options for this tool set as shown here so we get only a path and not a shape.

Once you have the path closed, go to the paths tab, make sure you have black as your foreground color and click on the fill path icon.

Copy the layer style from one of the previous layers.

And apply it to this new layer so you get the same bevel.

Let's now create a new layer for the next shape.

And repeat the same steps defining the shape of the back section of the face piece as shown here. Then filling the path with black and applying the same layer style.

Repeat once more for the third face piece as shown here considering the different position of this piece we would see some of the shape on both sides of the face section. And once again filling it with black and applying the same layer style.

Now go back to the group we made for the thin bevel of the face sections edge and make a quick selection of it.

Choose this gray color here.

Then select the bucket fill tool.

And finally delete and fill so we replace the image with the pure gray color.

Repeat the same for all three layers in the group.

Let's remain inside this group and make a new layer on top of the stack.

Then go back to the brush tool and select it.

Select this soft yet very small tip.

Sample a light gray from the highlights and paint in as shown here to suggest the thickness of the section.

Continue painting as shown here slight highlights that make our pieces blend together.

Keep painting as indicated here; and also be sure to view this section of the video to get a better idea of what is being done. Remember that you can sample between the gray tones at any time to match the exact shade in the sections.

There are some sections that require a medium gray instead of a highlight as seen here so just sample the required shade of gray and paint the section with it.

At the end of this process we have all the edges appear to have volume with this simple layer of paint.

Once we have finished, let's duplicate the group with all these sections and the paint layer.

Then let's merge the duplicate group.

We now have all the layers merged into one manageable section so select it an hide the original group.

Now sample a light gray from the tiny highlight shown here.

Grab this soft brush here and make it very large about 400px.

Lock the pixels on our grouped layer.

And apply a subtle soft highlight as shown here.

Next up make a quick selection of the skull image by hovering over the thumbnail and while holding command clicking on it (ctrl + click windows)

Then create a mask for this layer here.

grab this sharp brush also about 400px

And to finish up this step just mask off the section indicated here.

Step 5 - Eye and supporting structure.

Now let's work on the eye that will remain attached to the skull; so start by selecting this layer here.

Make a duplicate of it

Now let's use the elliptical selection tool.

And drag a selection of the eye as shown.

And create a layer mask

Then inverse the selection, and select the other duplicate of the layer.

And again create a layer mask for it. The result is that we have one layer with only the eye visible and the other has the eye section masked off.

Now select this layer here that is the one with only the eye visible.

And drag the eye over the skull as shown.

Next, make a duplicate layer of the eye.

And apply the layer mask for it.

Next, access the rotate command.

Rotate the duplicated eye as shown here.

Now pick up the eraser and select a brush tip as shown below.

Just erase the section for the eyelid.

Now let's use the clone tool to blend the two half.

Choose a small soft brush.

Select the top half eye layer and apply the layer mask.

And use this small cloning brush to blend the two half of the eye.

OK Next up let's open up this other image.

Let's drag a circular selection as shown here, and if needed access the transform selection command.

And scale the selection up to the border of the circular piece of this old radar panel.

Copy and paste the selection on to a new layer of the piece.

Scale the image as shown here, and make sure the layer is right below the eye we worked on previously.

Now let's fix the upper section of the eyelid mask.

So select the brush tool and the soft tip shown below.

Select the layer mask.

And mask in the top of the eyelid

Let's make a duplicate of the radar/eye piece layer.

Drag it as indicated here.

And also drag the layer as shown here below the face section.

Now let's scale it down so the border fits right into the eye hole.

Select the elliptical selection tool and drag a selection as shown below.

Then just hit delete so we end up with a metallic rim around the eye hole.

Then just desaturate the layer.

Next do a quick selection of the mask from this face section layer.

Select the layer for the three merged back pieces and create a mask on it.

This masks off the eye section from the black and creates a hole.

Next up duplicate the eye piece rim layer.

And select the scale command.

And scale the duplicate layer down just a tiny bit.

And drag the layer below the first rim.

This gives us a nice fast detail to the eye section.

Let's now select the eye layer mask.

Choose a soft brush tip at about 54px.

And softly mask off around the edge of the eye.

Now select the layer behind the eye.

And let's adjust the color balance on it as shown here to change the original greenish color of the radar screen.

Next up let's open up this other image.

And once again let's use the elliptical select in tool and define a selection as shown below.

Copy the selection and paste it to anew layer behind the eye and the eye piece. Then scale and reposition it as shown here.

Now create a mask for the layer.

Choose this tip for your brush.

And mask around the piece so it sits on the skull eye socket.

Rezise the brush tip to a small 8px size.

Switch the color of the foreground color to white so we can detail the edge of the mask.

Mask in to find the edges and how they will fit on the socket

And finally switch back to black to refine the edge once more.

Work on the mask edge until you have a nice suitable border that fits inside the eye socket of the skull.

Step 6 - Build up the pieces for the body

Let's now build up the body with some machinery stock images; let's start with this one here.

Copy and paste the image to a new layer on top and then access the rotate command.

Rotate the image as shown here.

And next flip it horizontal.

Next up select the brush tool again and choose the tip shown below.

And create a layer mask for it.

Start masking all the background as shown here.

Reduce the size considerably at about 10px

And with it zoom in to detail all the edge of the mask; of course you might need to reduce the brush size in some tight spots.

You must end up with the image without any part of the background.

OK next up access the scale command.

And scale the image a bit as shown and also flatten it just slightly.

Now we can drag the layer below all model layers.

Hide the torso layer and enable the face layer so we can see where to position this first section of the body.

Now just ,move the image as shown here.

Next, enable the layer shown here.

Select this brush tip shown here.

Mask off all this section of the torso.

Create a levels adjustment layer on top the machinery image.

Adjust its settings as shown here.

Then create a clipping mask for it.

We only want the darkening effect of this layer in certain areas so fill in the mask with black so its all gone.

Now select this brush tip for the brush tool.

And apply some shadow as indicated below using the mask.

Next up make a quick selection of the mask from this layer here.

Inverse the selection

Grab this big blocky brush and mask off all of the head section.

Open up this other image and copy/paste it to another layer.

Create a layer mask for it

Pick this brush tip here at about 98px

And repeat the same process as before, start roughly masking off most of the background.

Then reduce the brush size considerably

And go in to detail all of the machinery mask.

Rezise the brush where needed to make up a detailed mask all around the image.

This is what you should end up with.

Once we have the mask finalized, flip it horizontally.

And now just move the image and position it as shown here.

And drag it below the other machinery layer.

OK now let's go now to the layer texture for the skull and create a mask for it.

Pick the blocky brush once again and make it about 36 px

And mask off the texture from the skull teeth

Then select the levels layer for the skull and mask off the teeth section once again so we end up with white teeth.

OK back to our buildup process open up this other image and copy paste it to a new layer.

And let's repeat all the process once again creating a layer mask first.

Choose this small tip.

And we will now start masking off the close edge of the metal section rezising the brush as needed.

And once again you should continue masking until you have only this visible.

And now we can drag it below the face sections.

Flip the layer horizontally

And then scale the image as shown here.

And also let's rotate it a bit as indicated here.

And finally duplicate this last layer.

And drag the layer up to this position.

Then move it up a bit as shown here.

And also rotate it as shown.

Let's now choose this brush here at about 85px

Just mask off the top section as shown here.

Then scale an widen the image as indicated here.

Move it a bit under the large section of the face.

And finally rotate the layer just a bit as shown here, and that is it we have finalized setting up all the machinery sections for our image.

Step 7 - Shading

We will now apply shading to each separate section of our image by using several levels layers attached to each individual layer. So select the first part of machinery and create a new levels layer for it.

Make it a clipping mask

Adjust the levels as shown here, and set the layer mode to multiply which I find works best for shading in a scene like this one.

We will apply the shading effect of the levels only in selected areas so go ahead and use the fill tool to fill the mask with black.

This makes all the darkening influence of the levels layer to be masked off.

So we will be using a soft brush, no need for a determined size since its changed several times depending on where you are masking in the shadow as indicated here.

Yet for detailing the shadows I can tell you I used a small 12px brush, yet the same soft tip.

So this is the back section of machinery with shading applied and we will be making a separate shading levels layer for each layer.

Let's now go to the next layer; which already has a levels shading layer yet we will use a new levels layer.

So go ahead and create a new levels layer clipped to the machinery and adjust the levels as shown, plus set it to multiply.

And again we mask everything off by filling the layer mask with black.

And yes again all shading is masked off.

We will now continue using our soft brush starting at this size here yet varying the size as needed.

OK so let's start shading this part as indicated here.

And as I said change the brush size when you need.

And refine the shading also shifting between black and white, to add or remove the shading.

You can see here the finished shading in the section.

OK let's go ahead to the next layer and repeat the same steps; create a levels layer and adjust its settings as indicated here.

Back to our soft brush, this time starting at 55px since we have quite a few thin sections on this layer.

Fill the layer mask with black so the darkening its all masked off.

And again apply the shading where needed, also changing the brush size.

Let's now go to the first section of the face and make a levels layer for it too, and adjust the settings as shown here. There are some variation on intensity and opacity since the content of this layer is quite different than the previous metal parts.

This time we will not fill the mask with black; we will do the opposite and mask off the shadow with our brush.

Let's start with a soft brush of about 147px

And brushing with black let's the original brightness go through creating shading were we don't brush; actually very simple, paint with black you mask off the layers influence, paint with white, and you mask in the layer.

The process remains, you change your brush size where needed, this time make it larger at about 226px

To make a wide soft highlight zone where its shown here.

Re size your brush as many times as you need, mask in and mask off as many times as you need to get the shading shown below.

Continue shading all three sections of the face in exactly the same way; one levels layer for each and the same adjustments for each. Then just go in with your brush to let highlights in.

The same applies to the other side of the face, actually easier because of its position.

Create the same levels layer and repeat the same process until you have nice results.

Now we will go to the supporting eye piece layer and also give it a levels layer with these settings.

In this case, the same soft brush at about 164px yet with a bit of reduced opacity.

We will apply the same as the face sections, painting the mask with black to let the original light go through as indicated here.

Next we will work on the copper tubes behind the face area; yet the procedure its the same, make the levels layer as indicated here.

Let's use a small brush this time.

And start working the mask as shown here to mask off the shadow.

And continue with each tiny section giving each the same attention as the bigger images. That is it we have shaded all of our character successfully and with non destructive levels layers that we can come back and adjust if necessary.

Step 8 - BLULE Lights

Now we will add some cool blue detail lights on our image. Go ahead and create a new layer on top to start.

Then go ahead and select the gradient tool.

Choose this gradient I have prepared for you

Make sure you have linear gradient selected.

Drag a gradient over this section as shown.

If needed access the rotate command

Then just rotate until it is aligned with the piece below.

Create a layer mask for it and fill the mask with black.

Pick up this soft brush at about 68px

And painting in the mask with white, just let in the blue of the gradient as shown here.

Change the layer mode to overlay

Now make another layer for the next section exactly in the same way.

And apply the blue effect on the other transparent part as shown here.

OK so now we have a subtle glow on these two parts.

There is one of these glass parts behind the eye that we also need to apply some subtle glow so go ahead and make another glow layer for it and brush in the sections shown here.

OK next up we will add some circular glow to the naked eye piece.

Let's create a new layer for this.

Go back to the gradient tool and make sure you change it to a circular gradient.

Drag the gradient as shown here

Then create a layer mask

Select your brush tool with black selected

Choose this tip and adjust the settings as shown here.

Let's first off mask the center as shown here.

And then mask off the outside of it.

Next up let's create yet another new layer.

And we will do a similar effect over the other eye, so grab the gradient tool again and drag as shown here.

Then create a layer mask for it.

And with the same brush and in the same way, mask off the central part.

And then work on masking off the eye lids section

Adjust the size of the brush a bit.

And continue masking below the eye until you get this result.

Now I noticed that I wanted the glow a bit more to the outside of the eye so there is nothing to do but re scale the layer a bit as shown here.

And of course we need to re-work the mask.

Then just to finalize let's add a bit of reflection on the eye lids, so go ahead and create a new layer and set it to overlay.

Use the same brush just make it quite a bit smaller.

Select the same bright blue as the gradient and paint in some subtle highlights as shown here. And we have finalized this section of the tutorial, however since there is much brushing involved in this step it is also highly recommended to check out the video for this step.

Step 9 - Clothing

OK so we have the clothing section of the image without sections of the shoulders, plus we will arrange some strips of ragged clothing on top the machinery area. Let's start by selecting this layer here.

Let's now select this brush here.

And we will paint in the mask of the layer to bring back what we can of the original clothing.

So paint in as shown here.

But since we can complete the clothing just by doing this, let's make a new layer where we will paint the rest.

We can sample color from the image which ends up giving us this dark almost black blue.

And just paint in with the same brush the pieces missing indicated here.

Once you have it let's sample from the image clothing some slightly lighter gray.

Select the soft brush once again and make the brush size at about 85px

Paint in a bit of gray variation as shown with this lighter gray.

And paint the same in the other end of this painted layer; if you are spilling out of the painted areas just lock the pixels on the layer.

Once we have finalized it let's go back to the image layer

And paint the same subtle highlights to pair it up with the painted pieces.

Let's now see how the shadow will drop from these strips of clothing so let's make a layer style with drop shadow enabled with these settings.

To get the same shadow on the painted layer, just copy and paste the same layer style into it.

Looks good, so now let's detail on the painted layer a bit more of these ragged strips. Let's start by sampling some dark color of the clothing.

For this we will use this other brush and use it at a size of about 33px

Paint in a bit more as shown here.

OK now we will make the shading by hand so let's get rid of the layer style in both layer.

So now we have these two layers without style so we have to make a layer for the shading.

So now we will make a new levels layer below these two to create the darkness for the shading with the settings indicated below.

Let's select this brush here to work on the mask.

We will make it the same way as we have previously done first filling in the mask with black and then brushing with white just where we need the shading. And that is it we have finalized all of our shading.

Step 10 - Final adjustment layers

We will now make all the adjustment layers needed to finalize our image but first I will reposition all of our work a bit more centered, so select all of the layers.

And now just move all of it a bit more centered as indicated here.

OK we will start with a black and white layer all the way on top.

Adjust the settings as shown here, plus set the layer mode to overlay and reduce the opacity a bit.

OK now we will also modify the mask for this layer as well; and for this we will use this brush tip here.

Now we will mask off the influence of this layer from the sections shown here so we don't diminish our blue glow work.

Then we will make our brush bigger at about 432px

And brush off in the sections shown here.

Let's now continue with a hue/saturation layer.

Adjust just the saturation as indicated here.

And again go back to the soft brush at about 58px

And mask off in the sections shown here again to protect the blue glow from this layer influence.

Finally make a photo filter layer

Select color from the settings and adjust the density all the way up. The select the blue color shown below for the color.

And we will repeat the old process of filling in the layer mask with black and paint in only where we want this layer influence.

So as said grab your soft brush at about 90px

And let's paint in with white to let the blue cast of this layer in some areas.

Now brush in the indicated areas shown here.

And finally let's make yet another final levels layer, adjust its settings as shown here and fill in the mask with black.

Go back to the soft brush, this time at about 37px.

And brush in some shading as indicated here.

OK now let's make a duplicate of this layer here.

And then go to the add noise filter.

Setup the filter as shown here.

And set the layer mode to overlay. This gives us a subtle texture on these black metal sections.

And now all that is left is to crop the image a bit to our taste, maybe you prefer a different cropping so its up to you. I selected the crop shown here, just using the rectangular selection tool and defining the area for the new crop.

And then simply go to the image menu and apply the crop.
