Hello and welcome to this tuts+ course, Vector Pet Portraits: Cats! My name is Sharon Milne and I'm the design and illustration editor here on Tuts+. I'm also a vector fanatic. Love teaching others how to use Adobe Illustrator, and let's be honest here, a little bit of a crazy cat lady. Well, I say I'm a crazy cat lady. I mean I have two of my own who have been subjects of many of my own vector cat illustrations, as well as other feline folk. I find rendering fur a relaxing process and hope given the time and experience, you'll find this is true. In this short course, I'm gonna show you how to create a furry portrait from stock image using Adobe Illustrator. Based on the techniques, you should be able to tackle any other furry friend in the future. This course is aimed at intermediate students who have already have a moderate grasp of Illustrator. The key processes will involve drawing fur strand by strand, which isn't as challenging as you'd believe. Using gradients to enhance shading, using the appearance panel to create the piercing blue eyes, and a few other tips along the way. I would recommend taking on this project with a graphics tablet, as it will significantly cut down your working time. However, it is achievable with a mouse. So enough talking. Let's crack on with the first lesson, and that is to set up the file and creating the art brush we'll be using to render the fur.
