One of the best things about solid perfume is that you can experiment by layering different fragrances to find your signature scent. It's also easy to throw in your handbag for a handy go-to perfume, and it's also a gorgeous personalised present to make for family and friends. In this tutorial you'll learn how to use essential oils to make your very own natural solid perfume.
Supplies
- 1 tablespoon beeswax.
- 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil.
- 10 to 15 drops bergamot essential oil.
- 10 to 15 drops cedarwood essential oil.
- Five to 10 drops ylang ylang essential oil.
- Heat safe container.
- Plastic dropper.
- Two 15ml tins.
- Self-adhesive printable labels.

1. Preparation
Bring a shallow amount of water, about one to two inches, to a boil in a pot. This will be the first level of our double boiler system. While it’s getting hot, proceed to the next steps.
2. Combine the Oils and Wax
Step 1
Combine the beeswax and oils in a heat safe container. I'm using sweet almond oil, but feel free to use any carrier oil you have on hand. If you decide to use a butter, like shea butter, reduce the beeswax to two teaspoons and use four teaspoons of butter.
Step 2
Place your heat safe container in water, taking care to make sure water will not come in contact with any of the oils.
Put the heat on low to gently melt the wax.
3. Determine Your Essential Oil Mix
Step 1
While the base is melting, think about how you will combine your essential oils to create your signature scent. Experiment a bit by placing a few drops of oil on a paper towel to find out what you like and how scents mix well together.
I've chosen bergamot, cedarwood and neroli essential oil. Essential oils are readily available at most health food markets. Use your imagination and don't be afraid to experiment with combinations.
Step 2
Once completely melted, remove the solid perfume from heat and then carefully drop in your essential oils.
Step 3
Stir with the plastic dropper to ensure the solid perfume and essential oils are well combined.
4. Finish Up
Step 1
Using your dropper, carefully transfer your solid perfume from the heat safe container to your tins.
Step 2
Print labels for your new signature scent on a self-adhesive label sheet. If you're giving it to someone as a gift, you might like to list all of the ingredients on the label. If you're using an inkjet printer, make sure the ink dries completely before proceeding.
Step 3
Once the perfume has completely hardened, place the labels on your tin caps and cover your solid perfume.
