International Artist Feature: Czech Republic

Welcome back to our International Artist Series.

Today, we're catching up with four amazing artists from the Czech Republic, a Central European country with a rich history in nature and architecture. I asked each artist how their region and culture influenced their work, and they delivered great responses.

Filip Hodas

Let's first step into the world of Filip Hodas, a brilliant 3D artist from Prague. His highly detailed renders perfectly capture the effect of apocalyptic events on society. Enjoy these incredible renders of your favorite pop culture icons.

Pop Culture Dystopia

I live in the capital city, Prague, and I really like the architecture, history and culture here. It's metropolitan, but compact at the same time. Also, from a practical standpoint, it's quite easy to get around and fairly cheap to live in compared to bigger European cities.

Some of my work was influenced a fair bit by the remnants of architecture from the Communist era that can be found in the Czech Republic.

3D is not so wide spread here, so I know maybe just three-four people that do something similar in Prague and there are probably just two-three events a year about 3D or similar fields.

Because of that, I mostly keep in touch with the scene online. In other fields like 2D illustration, painting, graphic design and product design, I know that there is a pretty active and vibrant scene here with exhibitions, workshops, classes and talks happening all the time.

Tel Aviv, Jaffa

I love Prague very much for its majesty of architecture, the coolness of the parks and gardens, the silence of churches, and the responsiveness of the people.

Talking about Prague is talking about magic and with that, everything is possible. It’s an inspirational city.

S&F Greeting Card

I feel very comfortable with experimentation, evolving and giving other directions and possibilities to graphic work. I like to make something different but with a touch that's still mine, like the same person but with different clothes.

Škoda

The art community is pretty alive, you can find good and skilled people in all the creative fields. The strategic placement of Czech Republic is translated into a mix of cultures which is a creative, enriching experience.

And if you are lucky and work in creative environments it's even better!

Maja Chabirova

Our final feature belongs to Maja Chabirova, a freelance concept artist originally from Russia. After falling in love with Prague, she now creates remarkable character designs of futuristic objects and people.

Original Character Design

I am originally from a small town in the middle of Russia and I moved to Prague in 2005 to study. Since then I fell in love with this city!

My original inspiration to visit Prague came from the Linkin Park "Numb" music video; I remember dreaming about being an artist in this city, drawing at Charles Bridge and it felt so unreachable then! Now I am living my dream and looking back it was a long way, but totally achievable.

Post-Apocalyptic Cellphone

Prague is a very calm city and Czech people are generally in no rush compared to Russians. I feel that I've learned to enjoy the moment more and definitely became calmer since moving here.

It's like living in a beautiful countryside in the heart of Europe, because Prague is full of parks and not many people live here compared to Berlin or Paris. Also Czechs love dogs, it's a very dog-friendly city and so it was easy for me to get a dog here. He inspires my art a lot!

Single Cover for Hip-Hop Single

The art community as any community in Czech Republic is pretty small, in the end there is only 1.3 million people living in Prague, so in any market you take, it is rather small.

I am not really a party animal, so I rarely go outside to meet people, however they are extremely nice and everybody knows everybody in the art community here. I compensate lack of real human connections by running a YouTube channel devoted to drawing and freelance business. It has gathered an international community, which I cherish a lot.

Many thanks to the artists who took the time to answer my questions and share a bit about themselves and how their country and/or culture has affected their work. You can check out more of their work in the links below:
