Photoshop in 60 Seconds: Photo Typography
Write inspiring messages on your photos for Instagram! In this video, I'll show you how to decorate this portrait with creative typography in Photoshop. We'll learn how to use modern geometric fonts and simple Layer Masks to achieve this effect.
How to Add Typography to a Photo in Photoshop
Start with a great photo with a creative pose. I'll be using this Tattooed Woman Stock from Pixabay.
Then select the Type Tool (T) and type any word you'd like. Here, I'll be writing the word 'HOPE.' Type the first two letters near the top at a Font Size of 400 pt. Then, Duplicate (Control-J) the layer, position the copy lower, and replace these letters to finish the word.
Now add a Layer Mask to both type layers.
Select the Brush Tool (B) and use a Hard Round Brush with 100% Hardness and Opacity to mask away parts of each letter. Paint black to hide these areas away, or white to reveal them again.
Get creative and see how well you can weave the letters around the model's outfit and body. Leave some letters alone like, the letter E, to help the message read clearly.
Here is the final result below.
