About the Baskerville Font Family
Designed in England in the 1750s by John Baskerville, Baskerville is a serif typeface that is classified as a transitional typeface because it falls between the old-style calligraphy typefaces of the period and modern typefaces.
As a transitional typeface, Baskerville offered more consistency in the size and form of characters than the calligraphic styles that were popular at the time. It did this by shifting the axis of rounded letters to a more vertical position, increasing the contrast between thick and thin strokes, and making the serifs sharper and more tapered.
Following its founder's death, the typeface was sold to a French publisher, but several designs inspired by Baskerville sprang up. Most notable was Baskerville Old Face, also known as Fry's Baskerville, created by The Fry Foundry of Bristol. A digitisation of this typeface is still included with some Microsoft software.
Some Characteristics of Baskerville Font
- The bottom arm of its "E" projects further than the upper.
- The "W" has no centre serif.
- The bottom loop is open in the lower-case "g".
- Many characters have clear ball terminals, in contrast to the more wedge-shaped serifs of earlier fonts.
