Photoshop in 60 Seconds: Install & Load Brushes

Whether you're a designer or digital painter, the Brush Tool is a remarkable feature you should get to know. And with the option to create or download custom brushes, you'll want to expand upon the brush presets already available.

First, place the brushes into the Photoshop/Presets/Brushes folder, under the Adobe folder in the Program Files for Windows. Or if you're using Mac, place them in Applications.

Let's see how it's done by learning how to install and load brushes in the video below.

Check out how to create the painting from this video from my Realistic Skin Painting Tutorial. And download the custom dirt and decay brushes seen here from fellow Envato Tuts+ instructor, Kirk Nelson.

How to Install Brushes in Photoshop

By default Photoshop uses the .ABR file extension for its brushes. The problem is that with the new update, the process of loading them within the software has changed a bit, which is why I'm going to present you both methods so that if you're using an older version you'll be able to install them without any problems.

How to Install Brushes in Photoshop CC 2019

  1. First download the desired brush(es), and then move it to either the default Brush Presets Folder  (Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 > Presets > Brushes) or a custom brushes library folder of your choosing where you can easily find it.
  2. Bring up Photoshop, and after selecting the Brush tool (B), open up the Brush preset picker from within the top tool bar, and then click on the little gear icon found in the top-right corner.
  3. Once the submenu opens, select Import Brushes which will bring up the Load window where you will want to locate the custom brushes that you've just downloaded.
  4. As soon as the brushes are loaded within the software, open up the Brush preset picker again, and you should now see them added as a group, which if you click on will show you all the available brushes included within the downloaded .ABR file.
